Dennis Preston - Early Days

They do say that a true Yorkshireman should be both conceived and born within the county.

Mum and Dad (Jean and Stan) were on holiday in Bridlington in the summer of 1951 and I came along the following March in St Mary’s hospital, Leeds.

So, that’s both boxes ticked.

Leeds General Infirmary

Formative years spent in Seacroft on the outskirts of Leeds.

Vivid memory of visits to Leeds General Infirmary to have hole in head stitched and finger end sewn back on after separate incidents with a freshly tarmacked pavement and an old-fashioned washing mangle.

Also remember the noise and chaos of my younger brother being born at home when I was just five years old.

Dennis Preston - School Years

Moved to Manchester

- when Dad got a job as a copywriter and I spent the first three years learning to say ‘boook’ and ‘loook’ instead of ‘buk’ and ‘luk’.

Nickname at junior school and later at Poundswick Grammar was ‘North End’ – I think that’s what triggered my interest in football.

Dennis Preston - Now in Hertford

Now a long-time resident of Hertford

– the little known county town of Hertfordshire – famous for Alfred Russel Wallace (who?) and Biggles author Captain W.E Johns
